Matamoros, a city located in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico, has been known to have a significant presence of drug cartels in the past. The city has been a key smuggling route for drugs entering the United States, and various drug cartels have fought for control over the territory. The Gulf Cartel, one of Mexico's largest drug trafficking organizations, has historically operated in Matamoros and maintained a strong presence in the city.
However, it is important to note that the security situation in Matamoros and other parts of Tamaulipas can be highly volatile and subject to change. While there have been efforts by the Mexican government to combat drug cartels and organized crime in the region, violence and crime related to drug trafficking and other illegal activities have still occurred in recent years. It is always recommended to exercise caution and stay informed about the current security situation before traveling to or within the area.
